Last night, Trump’s “picked out of nowhere” running mate J.D. Vance gave a speech to the RNC while Rachel Maddow provided an insightful analysis of why Trump picked Vance on her show.
On the surface, Vance appears to be a strange pick. He once called Trump an “American Hitler.” And that was maybe one of the nicest things he said about the Republican candidate in 2016.
Vance’s positions are extreme and unpopular. He doesn’t support aid for Ukraine. He supports a national abortion ban. He’s taken some really misogynistic, theocratic positions on women, even though his wife is not exactly the paradigm of a “tradwife.” And as a former Democrat and a woman of color, she appears to be someone MAGA would hate. But of course, MAGA is willing to make exceptions to its racist, xenophobic ideals so long as the immigrant feminist is willing to join the ranks of sell-out tokens like Tim Scott or Nikki Hayley.
