my former neighborhood now looks like a war zone

The blame game is meant to distract from the true cause of wildfire intensification.

I just watched the community I lived in for over 12 years burn to the ground on L.A.’s local Channel 4 live streaming news.

I spent some of my happiest years in Pacific Palisades. My ex-husband grew up there and always dreamed of owning a home. We thought we were the luckiest, smartest people in the city when we managed to buy an empty lot in a cute little mobile home park on the Pacific Coast Highway overlooking the ocean. We paid about $70k for the lot back in 1996. We then spent another $40k on the manufactured home, designed to our specifications, that was built on a pier foundation, just like a regular home.

The community (mis-named Malibu Village as it wasn’t located in Malibu at all) had been owned by a landlord, and people rented the spaces for their own trailers and mobile homes. The residents pooled their money together, bought out the landlord, and set the community up as a condo association. There were negative aspects to that. Our HOA was poorly managed by some crazy and not-very-smart neighbors until my ex-husband got involved as the treasurer.
